Philadelphia area promotional and glamour model, Marissa Kropp and I got together to do a simple in studio photo shoot in early 2012. In this post are some of the simple portrait photographs that we shot and had a blast while we worked!
Marissa is a pure joy to work with and is a natural in front of the camera!
All the photographs are lit with two 7-inch reflectors, Elinchrom’s 17” White Beauty Dish, as well as some light from beneath courtesy of a small 24”x36” softbox. The final result was the composite image in the alleyway which was shot over seamless white and transferred to the grungy Philadelphia alleyway.

Working tirelessly to create and promote their music, Trel Mack and Q the Question are two hard-working young musicians/promoters who are making a name for themselves in the Philadelphia music scene. With the persistence and grit exhibited by both of these artists it’s only a matter of time before they make some serious waves in the national music scene.
It only takes a moment to hear the opening atmospheric notes that lead you into Trel’s latest track, “Dreams of a Winner” to realize that this is no amateur musician. The smooth undertones and urban feel of an amazingly well put-together music video further catapult this tune to new heights. Trel Mack records constantly with Street Knowledge Entertainment (SKE Records), an independent music label located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in an effort to create new music and produce his big hit; knowing him, it shouldn’t take long.

After spending some quality time relaxing and shooting some photos in the small coastal town of Nags Head in the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina I hooked up with Brodi and Gethin on my drive home to shoot some photos for general purpose use and for promotional material for their music.
When driving for 7+ hours it is sweet relief to have a break worked into your driving plans. Mine came as I rolled into Bridgeport, PA. It was a brisk, cool evening and the light was amazing. All the photographs I shot using a single light on a stand an toyed with what I could using the ambient light (what little there was) in the scene.
Brodi Valos is a talented and perpetually hard working musician/recording artist who performs throughout the Mid-Atlantic region with Philadelphia-based group Dirty Electrick. Brodi, who himself hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is recognized for his roots rock sense of style in fashion, performance, and in his music videos.
Inspired by classic music icons such as AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, & Ray Charles, and even my all-time favorite group, Social Distortion, Brodi creates a wonderful blend of Rock and Country in his tracks that you’re sure to enjoy.
Brodi is a man after my own spirit and, like myself, views Dr. Ron Paul as the best of the candidates for presidential election in the upcoming 2012 Presidential election as we rapidly approach the conclusion of the Republican Natl. Primaries.
Check out and ‘Like’ Brodi’s Facebook Page.
Gethin Lewis is a musician and guitarist from Philadelphia, PA who, along with playing music with Brodi, creates his own Psychedelic brand of music. A great personality and a bunch of fun to photograph!
We had a great time hangin’ out and shooting these photos and spent some time chatting after we put the camera down. Check out some of my favorites below!

At 22 years of age, Jeanette Lynne is a young acoustic singer and songwriter ready to break into the big-time music scene as she amasses a larger following –almost by the day– in the Philadelphia and surrounding area.
As she finishes her college degree she has her sights set on the road, getting out and sharing her music with her hometown area and then the whole world. This Philadelphia starlet it definitely headed in the right direction.
Writing songs about love and loss and singing with an angelic voice set to smooth acoustic tunes that can’t be resisted, Jeanette is poised to capture the collective musical heart of the Delaware Valley with soulful and engaging tracks such as “Love and you” and “Feels like forever”. You’d be doing yourself a disservice to live a moment longer with out peppering a little “Jeanette Lynne” into your life.
Check out Jeanette’s Facebook.
Listen to a few of Jeanette’s songs.
Check out Jeanette’s Youtube Channel.
Jeanette reached out to me to capture some photographs for personal music promotion as well as album artwork for some upcoming music she is creating. We had a great time shooting together and captured some beautiful images that really show off who she is and what she is.
These images were all shot with a single 400W head via the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra light system with a 39-inch Elinchrom Deep Octa. Quickly turning into my favorite setup to take on-location, this lighting rig is in a dead-heat with my 17-inch beauty dish (white) in the which-lighting-modifier-do-I-love-more competition. The 39-inch Deep Octa is a portable and beautifully soft light source capable of producing awesome results!
Below are a few of the images we captured that day…

As the calendar swings into Autumn in the Philadelphia area a different presence descended upon the city of brotherly love as the superb Scott Kelby and the gang from Kelby Training rolled into town with the hottest show on turf, the highly educational and informative seminar, Light it, Shoot it, Retouch it. Live! Presented by the always entertaining Scott Kelby.
Myself and three friends took the day and a short trip into the city to the PA Convention Center. There was pretty decent turn out for the event and there was no shortage of photographers spitting every imaginable bit of photo-jargon and babbling about snooze-inducing things like aperture, f-stops, ambient light, seamless backgrounds, fake eyelashes, and bass guitars (really, bass guitars were actually mentioned!). In short, it was a melting pot oozing with photo loving maniacs and sharpness obsessed creatures like myself and every other camera-tottin’ nut who attended.
We kicked off the day with a brief introduction, gear overview and tethered shooting setup with Adobe Lightroom, but quickly jumped into the first shoot. Scott spent a little time shooting some wonderful beauty head shots using a variety of clamshell lighting techniques as well as his amazing back lit softbox background technique -if you’re not sure what this is… you should have been there! Or check out KelbyTraining.com for some tutorials on the method.
After the shoot Scott covered some great Photoshop and Lightroom techniques for retouching the images he had just shot. This was the theme of the day. Light. Shoot. Retouch. The rest of the day went something like this:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Add to that all of Scott’s mini-tutorials and tips all throughout the day and you have an amazing learning experience top-to-bottom. Considering the amount of tips and the quality of content, this was the best Kelby Training hosted event I’ve been to yet.
Scott also shared a healthy does of his comedic side as he fumbled around on stage for the 6+ hours he was there, ragging on himself, ragging on Brad (his trusty main-man), ragging his subjects (albeit, gently), and us, the audience! I wouldn’t rather have it any other way! Haha! It was awesome! Rag away, Scott, rag away.
In this 6 hour spectacular Scott did an amazing job of starting at square one and building soup-to-nuts, everything. From brand new shooters to seasoned vets, everyone walked away with valuable tips, tricks, and glistening with an arsenal of new-found photography confidence and inspiration!
A huge thank you to the crew who made this whole event happen and thanks for the great time you gave us all, Scott! Hope you enjoyed your stay in Philadelphia as much as we enjoyed having you! Look forward to the next time you swing through the Keystone state.

A self-titled “Rock Vixen”, Darienne Rose is an up and coming Pop/Rock singer/songwriter out of the Philadelphia area. She contacted me about doing some photography which would help capture her image as an artist and individual for media press-kits that she could send to record labels, radio stations, and more.
Check out more about Darienne as well as samples of her music right here!
We photographed a series of portraits and captured three specific looks. Check out a few of the images we got that day.
A special thanks for hair and makeup goes to Lisa from HairTini Salon!

I had the opportunity to photograph the band, Starving the Tsunami a short while ago. Starving the Tsunami is a Rock band out of South Philadelphia, check out their website and the music on their website right here.
We made the most of a rainy day and crashed an abandoned barn (with permission, of course) and as the sun began to peer out from behind the clouds later in the evening took advantage of some great light to capture some photographs that the guys loved.
Check out a few of the images we captured that day below.
